Svalbard Global Seed vault: Group shall offer advice regarding measures
Statsbygg has entered into an agreement with a consulting firm that will propose various improvement measures for the access tunnel to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
The firm Dr. Techn. Olav Olsen has been awarded a contract to look at various ways of improving the access tunnel to the seed vault. The purpose is to improve safety from a long-term perspective. Snøhetta, Instanes Polar, Erichsen & Horgen, NGI and ECT will act as sub-consultants on the assignment.
After more than nine years’ operation, Svalbard Global Seed Vault will be subject to technical improvements. The background to the technical improvements is that the permafrost has not established itself as planned.
The group, led by Dr Techn. Olav Olsen will investigate potential solutions to counter the increased water volumes resulting from a wetter and warmer climate on Svalbard.
NOK 14 million has been set aside for investigations and design work and the group is scheduled to have a proposal ready for spring 2018.
The measures form part of a long-term plan to provide additional security to the seed vault, based on a precautionary approach.
